PSG WELCOME MESSAGE FOR 2017
As we embark on a new semester year, I want to welcome the new batch of Primary ones and their families into the Red Swastika School (RSS) community.
RSS was founded by philanthropists from World Red Swastika Society in 1951 and expanded from a wooden single storey building with six classrooms at Somapah to its current premise at Bedok. Over time, RSS has become one of Singapore’s prominent elementary school; celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2016. This New Year, 2017 signals the start of Primary Education Review & Implementation (PERI) upgrading for RSS to enhance RSS’s infrastructure. We seek parents’ continuous support and understanding toward the partial fund raising required and the inconveniences resulting from PERI upgrading project. The upgraded RSS premises after PERI upgrading will be better able to support to the needs of the students to further embrace holistic education.
Formed in March 2015, RSS PSG is a non-profit group of RSS parents, offering complimentary membership to current and alumni RSS students. We share a simple dream “Together we nurture our children”. The content of this newsletter will give an overview of key 2015/2016 RSS PSG events as well as feature the winning pieces of RSS PSG Art & Essay competitions. RSS PSG activities/events creates an additional opportunity for RSS parents to network with other RSS parents. RSS families become involve in the non-academic social part of children’s school life – to inculcate bonding, better communication, and most importantly become part of the memorable moments that mark your child’s growing years.
Our RSS PSG events would not be possible without all the help from parent volunteers. We hope to invite more parents to join us into our committee. Cumulative research* over the last two decades have reinforced the phenomena that students with parents who are involved in their school tend to have fewer behavioural problems and better academic performance. These students are more likely to complete high school than students whose parents are not involved in their school, with the largest effects often occurring at the elementary level. We need parents across all walks of life to join us to offer a more comprehensive activities to our children. More volunteers are needed for the following:
- Ad hoc events booth management like Chinese New Year fairs, Racial Harmony Day, Chinese / English week, others
- Digital Media expertise in website and graphic design work
- Event organisation and/ fund raising
- Traffic wardens
- Reading buddies and other learning expertise like special education, motivational sessions
Once again, welcome to RSS and I urge you to read more about RSS PSG from our website www.rsspsg.org.
Together we nurture our children.
